"Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what’s wrong and what’s right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!"

calgaras:

Robin’s, by a long shot. I cry every single time I read or watch her backstory. Sometimes I only need to look at a couple of pages before I start tearing up. Law’s past was absolutely horrible, and as I have said here, is worse than most of the Straw Hats’ histories (in my opinion)… however, it didn’t hit me as I was reading it. I think it was too quick. This is the problem Zoro and Usopp’s backstories had, both of which also happened in only a single chapter (Usopp’s in only like 2 pages). They were sad of course, but the telling was such a quick thing that I didn’t have time to get invested in the people who died. I’m also not in love with Law enough to be heartbroken just by the knowledge that he suffered terribly. Laime was literally in 3 panels the entire chapter, so I just can’t get emotional over the fact that she’s gone. I recognize that it was a horrible, indescribably painful tragedy, but it’s not one that emotionally effected me.

One more thing… Sacrifice is an incredibly important part of what makes One Piece so emotional for me. Shanks, Zeff, Dr. Hiluluk, Bellemere, Bon-chan, Saul, Merry, and more—they all sacrificed themselves for people they care about, and that really hits me hard. No one sacrificed themselves in Law’s flashback—it was just meeting these people and then just 1 or 2 pages later seeing them all horribly murdered, without even any tearful goodbyes (other than Law’s tormented sobbing after they were already gone). (The importance of self sacrifice in One Piece is something I wrote about in this post.)

If anything, I’m expecting Corazon’s death to be what makes me cry in Law’s backstory. What happened to Flevance and Law’s family was sub-point to what is actually being addressed in this flashback—Law’s history with Doflamingo and Corazon’s death. That’s the story that’s being told, and that’s what I expect Oda to give the most depth and attention to. I’m fully expecting it to hit me a whole lot harder than everything in chapter 762.

calgaras:

It’s one thing to pick favorites, or which one hit the closest on a personal level, but it’s difficult to say which was objectively the most tragic. Kinda of a “my horribly traumatic childhood experiences are worse than your horribly traumatic childhood experiences” kind of thing.

Nonetheless… I’d have to say Robin’s childhood was the worst, because her loss was the most absolute and total. Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Usopp, and Franky all experienced terrible losses (or endured terrible suffering, in Sanji’s case), but they otherwise had semi happy childhoods. Luffy had Ace and Dadan, Zoro lived safely in his dojo (we don’t know whether he had family on the island or not), Sanji had Zeff, and Usopp still had friends on his island, and Franky got to spend over 14 years living well with Tom.

Even Chopper and Nami, who I think had overall worse childhoods than the previously discussed members, had things to live for. After losing Bellemere and being made into a slave by Arlong, Nami still had Nojiko and Genzo and the goal of buying back her village to live for. Chopper had even less, as he was exiled from his herd and lost Hiluluk, his only friend and family, but he still had Dr. Kureha to learn from and be close to (anyone who argues that she isn’t a mother to him is going to have to fight with me).

Robin though… had nothing. Left by her mother as an infant with family who detested her, and hated as a monster by adults and children alike, the only people she cared about and cared about her on Ohara were the scholars. She only knew Saul for a matter of days, but he was still one of the closest and only friends she ever had. When the Buster Call came raining down on Ohara, Robin lost her entire world. She lost Prof. Clovis and all the other scholars, she lost Saul, she lost the mother she basically had only just met for the first time—there was nothing left for her. Not a single soul in the world cared about her, and she spent the next 20 entire years of her life without a single person she could trust or believe in. People were nothing but tools for her to use to survive, or weapons that might be pointed at her. Except for the dream of discovering the truth of the Void Century Robin didn’t have a single reason to live—and a dream like that is no replacement for having people who love you.

So there. I can’t say anything about Brook since we don’t know a thing about his childhood, but I feel like Robin has had the worst life experience of all the crew.

LAW THOUGH. He’s in quite a similar place to Robin right now, in that he was forced to watch everyone he loved die and was left with nothing. The Law obsessed with the destruction of everything around him is exactly what Aokiji feared that Robin would become. At least Law became close to Corazon, but he lost him as well. So whether Robin or Law had a worse childhood, I don’t think it’s possible to say. They’re both indescribably terrible and the losses they suffered were absolute, leaving them with little other than a base drive for survival, or a desire for indiscriminate destruction.

I am the only one who sees you crying

They are like two sides of a coin and ugh Cora started to leave the past behind and become someone who put himself underneath others (aka falling around a lot) while Doflo got caught in  the past still trying to be above others and he didn’t try to change…and that’ll be his downfall his damn arrogance

Me some years ago: One Piece? Seems to be a fun and cute anime!
Me now: I was so wrong.

So I just realized why Law must have been so taken aback by Nami’s (and Chopper’s) insistence on staying and helping the children on Punk Hazard…

It probably reminded him of the nun who was trying to help him and the other children in his town escape…

Excuse me while I go cry some more…

Perhaps law’s tattoos aren’t simply a cheesy fashion faux pas but actually hold a sentimental meaning reminding him of what he’s lost.
